Biographie
Studied anthropology at the London School of Economics, where he became interested in ways that trade could be made fairer, particularly through knowledge and technology transfer, and through long term strategies of socio-economic empowerment embedded in trade partnerships.
Ryan has travelled extensively, in the far east, Africa, and throughout Europe, and took part in an aid convoy to Tuzla, Bosnia, in the Summer of 1995.
After travelling in India and Sri Lanka, and working and talking with tea plantation workers, and others involved in the tea industry, he became convinced that the Internet provided the means if not necessarily the ends for fairer markets.
Following from this he worked at a community IT project in Brixton, South London, establishing courses teaching basic IT literacy, internet skills, audio & visual manipulation, and web publishing.
As the Free Software Movement progressed, and its dream of a 'free' operating system was realised in the form of GNU/Linux, Ryan set up as an independent consultant, developer, and protagonist of these new technologies, and the co-operative systems that they have manifested.
Ryan currently lives in Bristol, UK, with his one-year-old son.
In a voluntary capacity, he is also the Technical Director of Trinity Community Arts Centre in Bristol, where he is involved in audio development and training, internet broadcasting, organising a linux audio conference, and free software advocacy.
